Azella Alvarez has been looking for a way to introduce her authentic Filipino cuisine to more people in Syracuse. Mickey Venditti has been looking for someone to run the kitchen at his bar just north of the Shop City plaza.
Starting Oct. Alvarez, who has been catering and operating a mobile food stand around town for several years, will make her signature lumpias -- Filipino-style eggrolls.
She'll also create a menu featuring other foods from, or influenced by, the Phillippines, where her family is from. That means she'll do her take on things like chicken tenders and wings -- her signature wing style uses adobo sauce.
The plan calls for Alvarez to have the kitchen open from 11 a.
The Goodtime saloon is accustomed to things that are different -- it's known for Fililino pickled foods served at the bar -- including pig hocks and gizzards. The saloon has fully equipped kitchen, but Venditti only recently brought it back into service after shutting it down for awhile.
It's among about a dozen bars and restaurants he's been associated with in the past few decades. Alvarez is a third-generation Filipino-American. Her parents used to operate a bakery in San Diego.
Her first big introduction to the Syracuse market was at the Taste of Syracuse. This year, she also operated a stand at the New York State.
