This section two widely issued UK medals: The Naval General Service Medal 1915-62 (NGS), General Service Medal 1918-62 (GSM 1918-62) and The General Service Medal 1962 (GSM 1962).
What is a service medal
These three medals were issued with a clasp which commemorates the recipient's involvement in the specified action. A clasp will be issued for a conflict which it is felt does not justify its own medal, but is worthy of some form of commemoration.
Before 1962, Royal Navy personnel were awarded the NGS, Army and RAF personnel would have been awarded the GSM. In 1962, it was decided that there would be one service medal for all three services.
